Darius I was the third king of the Persian Achaemenid Empire. Also called Darius the Great, he ruled the empire at its peak, when it included much of West Asia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, parts of the Balkans, portions of north and northeast Africa including Egypt, eastern Libya, coastal Sudan, Eritrea, as well as most of Pakistan, the Aegean Islands and northern Greece / Thrace-Macedonia.
Darius ascended the throne by overthrowing Gaumata, the alleged magus usurper of Bardiya with the assistance of six other Persian noble families; Darius was crowned the following morning. The new king met with rebellions throughout his kingdom and quelled them each time. A major event in Darius's life was his expedition to punish Athens and Eretria for their aid in the Ionian Revolt and subjugate Greece. Darius expanded his empire by conquering Thrace and Macedon and invading Scythia, home of the Scythians, nomadic tribes who invaded Media and had previously killed Cyrus the Great.
Darius organized the empire by dividing it into provinces and placing satraps to govern it. He organized a new uniform monetary system, along with making Aramaic the official language of the empire. Darius also worked on construction projects throughout the empire, focusing on Susa, Pasargadae, Persepolis, Babylon and Egypt. Darius devised a codification of laws for Egypt. He also had the cliff-face Behistun Inscription carved, an autobiography of great modern linguistic significance. Darius also started many massive architectural projects, including magnificent palaces in Persepolis and Susa.

This is a well written book of Darius. The author has taken great pains to make it easily read by the young adult history buff. I was hoping for a more in-depth type of reading. Mr. Abbott has covered all the major occurrences in Darius life, but I was hoping for a more depth, and analytical approach to this great leader of the Persian's. Darius was placed into power in very unique way, and his power play on the seating King was also a major move also. Over all, a fine book.Product details

Darius the Great eBook Jacob Abbott Reviews
I was really disappointed, basically they guy summarizes Herodotus; with no new information on Darius, other than just critizing Herodotus for his improbable accounts....I was expecting something different
There is nothing in the blurb to indicate that this is a publication of 1878 which was simply reprinted in 2003! Silly me, I thought I was purchasing a very recent publication. Although very readable, the book clearly displayed the knowledge about Darius available to the nineteenth century reader and nothing more recent. In addition the dust jacket incorrectly referred to Sir Henry Rawlinson's copying and decipherment of the Behistun inscriptions of Darius as happening in the "early 18th century" - in fact, he was born in 1810!
I am so pleased to see to see this classic book back in print. Jacob Abbot is one of the most talented historians to come out of the 1800's. His biographies and historical fiction are enchanting, accurate and an absolute joy to read. This one about Darius and the Persian Empire is appropriate for ages 12 to adult. It's easy to understand, gives enough detail without overburdening the reader with useless information, and paints an accurate picture of the events it describes. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.
The cover says "with thirty-four illustrations" and yet from the first page to the last their are exactly zero illustrations. Seemed like a scam to me. I'll be sending this back. Thanks for the "alternative facts" on the cover.
